Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy

The adrenal glands are small, solid, triangular organs located above each kidney. They produce a number of hormones, including adrenaline, steroids, sex hormones, and blood pressure regulatory hormones.

Laparoscopic adrenalectomy involves removal of one or both adrenal glands. This procedure is performed on patients with benign or malignant tumours within the adrenal glands.

The procedure involves a few small incisions in the abdomen or back through which a thin telescope like instrument is inserted (laparoscope). The laparoscope is attached to a tiny video camera, which enables the surgeon to visualize an enlarged view of operation site on a television monitor. Carbon dioxide gas is introduced into the cavity to inflate the space and give a clear view of the operating area. The other incisions/ports are used to insert surgical instruments to perform the adrenalectomy procedure.

Most patients are able to go home the next day or within a few days.
